For asphalt mixtures with a nominal maximum aggregate size of less than or equal to 19 mm, a 300 mm long × 300 mm wide × 50 mm thick plate mold should be used for molding; for asphalt mixtures with a nominal maximum aggregate size of greater than or equal to 26.5 mm, a 300 mm long × 300 mm wide × 80-100 mm thick plate mold should be used for molding.

The Specimen Molding Machine generally produces plate-shaped specimens measuring 300mm long, 300mm wide, and 50-100mm thick. The specimen thickness can be selected based on the aggregate size, and other thicknesses can also be used as needed. Considering the relatively thick asphalt pavement in my country and the widespread use of asphalt-stabilized macadam and large-size asphalt macadam, this revision has removed the 300mm long, 300mm wide, and 40mm thick specimen size. Instead, the test mold should be selected based on the nominal maximum aggregate size to better reflect actual conditions.
For ordinary asphalt mixtures, 50mm thick specimens can be compacted according to the specified number of times. However, for specimens thicker than 50mm, the required number of compactions must be determined through testing. For S-type compacted mixtures, SMA mixtures, and mixtures containing modified asphalt, high-viscosity asphalt, or other modified materials, the number of compaction cycles must also be determined through testing.
