Asphalt Saybolt Viscometer Bitumen Saybolt Viscosity Tester

Bitumen Saybolt viscometer is designed and manufactured in accordance with the requirements of T0623-1993 "Asphalt Saybolt Viscosity Test (Saybolt Heavy Oil Viscometer Method)" in the People's Republic of China industry standard JTG E20-2011 "Test Procedures for Asphalt and Asphalt Mixtures in Highway Engineering." 1. saybolt viscometer Testing Instruments consists of a bath, a bath temperature controller, and a computer for displaying and calculating measurement parameters (calibration coefficients, time, viscosity, etc.).
    2. It utilizes microcomputer control technology and features dual-channel simultaneous testing, enabling parallel testing of two samples. The measured parameters are digitally displayed and their arithmetic mean is automatically calculated.
    3. It can simultaneously test two samples at the same temperature and generate a time-averaged value.
    5. It has an LCD touch screen with both Chinese and English control interfaces.

     Structure and Principle

Adjust the water temperature in the constant-temperature water bath according to the test temperature requirements. Place a certain amount of asphalt sample into the sample tube. Remove the cork at the bottom of the sample tube and simultaneously press the timer switch to allow the sample to flow into the receiving bottle. The timer stops when the sample reaches the 60ml mark on the receiving bottle.
    Instructions:
    1. Power Supply: The power supply circuit must be equipped with an overload fuse and properly grounded.
    2. Fill the bath with tap water or oil, but avoid filling it too high to prevent overflow.
    3. Secure the thermometer in the designated position in the thermostat.
    4. Turn on the "Power" switch; the touch screen will illuminate.
    5. The manual includes operating instructions for the controller. Please read these carefully before performing any tests.

    Instrument Calibration

The Asphalt Saybolt viscometer should be recalibrated no more than three years after use. The calibration procedure is as follows:
    1) Verify the viscosity measured by a Saybolt gravimetric viscometer at 50°C.
    2) If the outflow time of the standard viscosity oil measured by the viscometer (at least 90 seconds) differs by more than 0.2% from the standard outflow time provided in the viscometer manual, the measured time should be corrected using the calibration factor calculated according to the following formula. If the error exceeds 1%, the instrument should not be used.

    Maintenance and Repair

    1. When using the saybolt furol viscometer for the first time, check that the power supply meets the requirements.
    2. When switching from water to thermal oil as the heating medium, be sure to drain all the water from the inner tank to prevent boiling and overflow of water in the oil.
    3. Since all products undergo rigorous testing before leaving the factory, the temperature controller generally does not require adjustment. If the actual operating temperature exceeds the technical specifications, adjust the temperature controller according to the specific instructions.
    4. After each test, be sure to clean the sample tube thoroughly.
    5. Causes of the heating element not heating include: poor electrical connection, a blown fuse, poor switch contact, or poor contact in the heating element leads.
    6. If the Saybolt Viscosity Apparatus is not used for an extended period, keep it in a clean water bath to prevent corrosion. Install a dust cover and store it in a dry, ventilated room to prevent moisture from affecting its operation.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the main purpose of the Saybolt Viscometer in bitumen and asphalt testing?
A: The Saybolt Viscometer is designed to determine the empirical flow resistance (Saybolt Furol or Saybolt Universal viscosity) of petroleum products, cutback asphalt, and emulsified asphalt at specified temperatures.
Saybolt Furol Viscosity (SFS): Uses a larger orifice for thicker materials like asphalt binder and emulsified asphalt (typically tested at 25 or 50℃).
Saybolt Universal Viscosity (SUV): Uses a smaller orifice for lighter petroleum oils and cutbacks.

Q2: Which international test standards does this equipment strictly comply with?
A: The tester is fully compliant with global paving and petroleum testing specifications:
ASTM D88: Standard Test Method for Saybolt Viscosity.
ASTM D244 / AASHTO T 59: Standard Test Methods and Practices for Emulsified Asphalts.
AASHTO T 72: Standard Method of Test for Saybolt Viscosity.
EN 12846: Bitumen and bituminous binders - Determination of efflux time of bituminous emulsions by the efflux viscometer.

Q3: What is the advantage of a Dual-Tube (Two-Station) bath configuration?
A:Doubled Testing Efficiency: Allows operators to run two simultaneous test runs (or a sample alongside a reference control) under identical thermal conditions, halving total laboratory testing time.
Versatile Tube Options: Easily swap between Saybolt Universal (SUV) and Saybolt Furol (SFS) precision orifices based on sample viscosity.

Q4: How accurate is the bath temperature control, and what temperature range does it cover?
A: Temperature Range: Room temperature up to $240℃ (464F), accommodating both low-temperature emulsion tests (25℃/50℃) and high-temperature asphalt binder testing.
PID Microprocessor Precision: Maintains bath temperature stability within ±0.1 ℃ with built-in motor-driven bath stirring to eliminate thermal gradients.
Dual Digital Display: Displays target set temperature and real-time bath temperature simultaneously.

Q5: What orifice types, tubes, and glassware are included in the standard package?
A: The standard package includes a complete ready-to-test kit:
Stainless Steel Heating Bath Unit with Stirrer Assembly
Two (2) Brass Oil Tubes with Stainless Steel Orifice Tips (Furol & Universal Orifices)
Two (2) Receiving Flasks ($60 mL capacity, calibrated glass)
Tube Cleaning/Withdrawal Pipettes & Cork Stoppers
Bath Thermometer Holder & Precision Calibrated Temperature Sensor    Calibration Certificate & Comprehensive User Manual

Q6: How is the viscosity calculated, and does the system include a digital timer?
A:Integrated Electronic Timers: Features built-in digital timers for each station that accurately record efflux time down to 0.1 seconds.
Direct Efflux Time Reading: The measured viscosity is reported directly in Saybolt Furol Seconds (SFS) or Saybolt Universal Seconds (SUS), representing the time required for 60mL of fluid to flow through the standardized orifice.

Q7: What safety features are built into the high-temperature heating bath?
A:Over-Temperature Protection: Independent safety thermostat automatically cuts power to heating elements if the bath exceeds set safety thresholds.
Low Liquid-Level Alarm: Prevents heating element burnout by monitoring bath fluid levels.
Thermal Insulation: Double-walled stainless steel cabinet with high-density thermal insulation keeps exterior touch surfaces safe for laboratory operators.
